Gardaí have identified the body of a man found in a suitcase in a canal in Co Kildare.

Kenneth O’Brien, 33, was from Clondalkin in West Dublin. His remains were discovered by youths walking along the canal bank on Saturday.

Mr O’Brien’s torso was found wrapped in a plastic bag inside in a suitcase in the Grand Canal at Ardclough on Friday.

Gardai matched DNA from the body found in the Grand Canal with that of Mr O'Brien - who was missing from his home.

A relative of a missing person contacted Gardaí and subsequently provided gardaí with a DNA sample. Analysis of that sample was conducted at Garda Headquarters and the results of that analysis matched exactly Mr O'Brien.

Gardai are continuing to appeal for the public’s help.

They wish to speak to anyone who was in or around the Grand Canal near Ardclough on Friday and early Saturday to contact them.

In addition, gardai say they are keen to speak to anyone who may have observed, seen or had any contact with Kenneth since the early hours of Friday morning, when he left Lealand Road in Clondalkin, or can assist in tracing his movements.

They have also repeated their request for anyone returning to their property or premises after the weekend to check to see if there was anything unusual. They have asked for people to examine if there was a room or equipment disturbed or their premises or in any way different than when they left.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the incident room at Leixlip Garda Station 01 666 7800.
