Areas along the river Shannon are said to be on alert for further flooding following severe rain over the last 24 hours.

Water levels in the Athlone area have already increased by eight centimetres since Wednesday.

A yellow rainfall warning for Munster and Leinster has now ended, however communities are monitoring flood defences around the clock.

Director of Services at Westmeath County Council Barry Kehoe says there's been very little respite, but the local people in the affected areas "they've been out themselves and they've been manning pumps and keeping an eye on them, manning defences and making sure everything is working".

The news of high alerts follows on from rainfall warnings for parts of Leinster and Munster, with an extra 15 to 25 mm of rain - expected to be heaviest on high ground.

Dublin, Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, Cork, Kerry and Waterford are likely to be worst affected, while more than 200 flood alerts and warnings are in place in England, Scotland and Wales as storm Eva makes it way across the UK.
