An animal welfare group in Australia says a sheep has survived an emergency shearing procedure that saw it shed some 90 pounds of wool.

The Royal Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animal in Canberra has issued before and after photos of Chris the sheep.

They are calling attention to the neglect he suffered and asking animal owners to take better care of their sheep.

Chris the merino sheep had a massively overgrown wool coat when he was found.

Workers say they think he was probably away from his herd and humans for at least five years.

In spite of that he has only minor health problems.

 

It took a team of five shearers to get him back into shape, and there was a risk that he could die of shock during the procedure.

This morning they confirmed he had survived the operation, and said he will likely be available for adoption shortly.

Chris' condition made headlines around the world, and he even made it onto Japanese television.

But the RSPCA has happily shared an after shot of Chris, who is looking considerably lighter.
