Uplift Ireland is calling for solidarity with refugees and the group say over 12,000 people have offered to open their homes to asylum seekers.

They are now challenging Enda Kenny to now match that total.

Yesterday the Justice Minister indicated we would take around 1,800 refugees.

But campaigners say that is not enough, and are meeting at famine memorials around the country to remind us of our own migrant past.

The events are being organised by Uplift along with the Irish Refugee Council and Migrant Rights Centre.

Uplift Organiser Siobhan O'Donoghue says Irish people uniquely identify with refugees:

These people - who were at the Dublin famine memorial at Custom House Quay, where a minute's silence was held earlier this afternoon - explained why they have come out today:

Vigils, collections and other events in solidarity with refugees have been taking place across the country, including at Electric Picnic in Stradbally, Co Laois:

Picnicers are also being reminded they can also do their bit for the refugee crisis.

Organisers are looking for donations of tents, sleeping bags and other camping gear that will go towards refugees seeking shelter near the port of Calais.

The pick up point will be at the Global Green campsite at 10am on Monday. You can find out more information here.

Meanwhile the Minister for Foreign Affairs says we need to tackle the 'root causes' of the current 'surge in migration'.

The issue has been discussed at an informal meeting of EU foreign affairs ministers in Luxembourg.

Charlie Flanagan says it is "not just about dealing with the consequences when people flee their homes" - and we need to "support the peace efforts in war-torn countries".

Many of the current refugees who have been left homeless are escaping conflicts in Africa and the Middle East, particularly Syria.

Thousands of refugees and migrants are entering Austria from Hungary today, with many believed to be on their way to Germany.
