Queen movie Bohemian Rhapsody was the surprise winner of two major awards at last night's Golden Globes.

The film took home the awards for Best Film Drama while Rami Malek, who played late front man Freddie Mercury, won Best Drama Actor.

Accepting the award the US actor paid tribute to the Legendary Queen singer.

“Thank you to Freddie Mercury for giving me the joy of a lifetime,” he said. “This is for you, gorgeous.”

In the TV drama category, Sandra Oh won Best Actress for her role in Killing Eve - meaning Irish actress Caitriona Balfe missed out.

However, UK actress Olivia Colman was named best actress in a comedy or musical for her portrayal of British Queen Anne in The Favourite - which was produced by Irish production company Element Pictures.

Collecting her prize, Colman said: "Cor blimey, thank you so much. I'm not going to cry because my entire table will point and laugh at me...

"I would like to tell you how much working on this film meant to me but I can't remember because I'm too excited."

She also jokingly referred to her co-stars Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz as "ma bitches."

The Bohemian Rhapsody victory came as something of a surprise – with the Queen biopic beating out the challenge of favourite A Star Is Born, starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.

Afterwards Gaga paid tribute to Bradley for how he directed the movie.

“he really knocked it out of the park with the music,” she said.

“He really, really wanted it to be sung live; he wanted it to be recorded live so most of if not all of what you hear on the soundtrack to this film was sung live.”

There were also wins for Christian Bale – who won for his portrayal of Dick Cheny in Vice – and Richard Madden – who took home best TV drama actor for his role in Bodyguard.

Bale thanked his director Adam McKay, joking that the filmmaker chose him because he thought "I have got to find someone who can be completely charisma-free and vile - it's got to be Bale."

He also thanked "Satan for giving me inspiration for this role."

Glenn Close was also a surprise winner in the best drama actress category.
