Defender Séan McLoughlin has become Championship side Hull City's fifth signing of the summer.

The 22-year-old has signed a three-year deal, with the option to extend for another year for an undisclosed fee.

McLoughlin joined the underage setup with the Leesiders in 2013 and made 63 appearances for the club in all competitions, including in the Champions League and Europa League qualification campaigns. He has also been a feature for the Republic of Ireland at underage levels.

Cork City finished second in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division last season, 10 points behind the winners Dundalk. However, this season they are currently in 7th position just nine points above a relegation play-off place.

Speaking on signing for Hull City, McLoughlin said, “the move has been going on for the past couple of weeks now, so to finally get over here and sign – I’m delighted.

“I’m buzzing to be here and to be a Hull City player. I know I’ve still got a lot to learn, but it’s a fantastic opportunity and I’m looking forward to the challenges ahead.

The Tigers are managed by ex-Northern Irish international Grant McCann, who said to the BBC before the deal went through that, "he gives us more strength and depth into the group."

Hull City are preparing for their third season-in-a-row in the Championship after finishing in 13th position last season.

After the deal went through, Cork City Head Coach John Cotter said: “Seán has been brilliant for us; not just this year, but since he came in. Seán came through the academy here after coming in from Springfield, he left to go to UCC, got his degree and came back.

"That is a credit to Seán himself and shows the pathway that is there. He’s a great lad, a very intelligent lad, and the way he has done it is the right way, getting his degree. It just shows you what hard work and sacrifice does, and we all wish Seán the very best for the future."
