Tiger Woods has been taken to hospital after a car accident, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The reports were confirmed this evening, with the department saying his car sustained "major damage", with Woods having to be cut out of the vehicle with the "jaws of life".

He was then taken to a local hospital, with his agent Mark Steinberg confirming his client had sustained "multiple leg injuries" which required surgery.

"Tiger Woods was in a single-car accident this morning in California where he suffered multiple leg injuries. He is currently in surgery and we thank you for your privacy and support," Steinberg said.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department issued the following statement earlier this evening.

"On February 23, 2021 at approximately 7.12am, LASD responded to a single vehicle roll-over traffic collision on the border of Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes. The vehicle was travelling northbound on Hawthorne Boulevard, at Blackhorse Road, when it crashed. The vehicle sustained major damage.

"The driver and sole occupant was identified as PGA golfer Eldrick "Tiger" Woods. Mr Woods was extricated from the wreck with the "jaws of life" by Los Angeles County firefighters and paramedics, then transported to a local hospital for his injuries.

"The traffic investigation is being conducted by investigators from LASD Lomita Station," their statement reads.

Woods has been absent from the tour since December following further back surgery. The 15-time major winner had speculated he could be back in action for the Masters in April, when speaking at the Genesis Invitational in California at the weekend, a tournament he hosts every year.
