The so-called New IRA has admitted responsibility for the murder of journalist Lyra McKee in Derry.  Lyra McKee was shot in the head as she covered rioting on the Creggan estate on Thursday night and died later in hospital.  Trouble began as officers carried out a search operation aimed at disrupting dissident republicans ahead of Easter commemorations.

In a statement given to The Irish News using a recognised code word, the self-styled New IRA said that, "The IRA offer our full and sincere apologies to the partner, family and friends of Lyra McKee for her death."

We spoke to Dr Paul Burgess, Senior lecturer in Applied Social Studies in University College Cork & Colum Eastwood, SDLP Leader & MLA for the Foyle Constituency
