Hillary Clinton has cancelled a campaign trip to California while she recovers from pneumonia, according to a campaign official.

The diagnosis emerged yesterday after the Democratic presidential candidate stumbled while leaving a ceremony to mark 15 years since the 9/11 terror attacks in New York.

Mrs Clinton's doctor said she was put on antibiotics and advised to rest following the diagnosis on Friday, but added the politician was "recovering nicely".

Pat Hickey has claimed he is innocent of all charges laid against him by a Brazilian court, and vowed to fight each and every one of them.

A judge in Rio last week formally accepted charges put forward by a public prosecutor against the former OCI president.

In a statement yesterday, the 71-year-old said he was "very heartened and humbled" by the support he has received from people in Ireland and from the international sporting world.

Junior minister John Halligan's threat to take down the government will be discussed at a Fine Gael parliamentary party think-in in Kildare today.

The Independent Alliance TD warned in an interview this weekend that he would "rain hell" on Leinster House if extra heart services could not be provided to his local hospital in Waterford.

The row has undermined the stability of the Fine Gael government, which needs a minimum of 58 votes in the Dáil. Currently, with Minister Halligan, it has just 59.

Some Syrian rebel groups have expressed concern that an upcoming ceasefire in the war-torn country is a "trap" which will largely benefit Bashar al Assad's government.

A nationwide cessation of hostilities, brokered by the US and Russia, is due to begin at sundown today (about 4.45pm Irish time) - yet some rebels claim the deal will only increase the suffering of the Syrian people.

In a letter to the US, the Free Syrian Army said it plans to "co-operate positively" and respect the ceasefire, but wrote that a lack of enforcement mechanisms and a lack of provision for some of the country's most besieged areas were worrying.

Gardaí in Dublin have appealed for witnesses after a taxi driver was stabbed during a car jacking in Swords over the weekend.

The driver was attacked after he picked up two male passengers at the Airside Retail Park on Saturday morning.

Both suspects drove off in the taxi, a 10-D registered grey Ford Mondeo, and it was later found burnt out near Bellewstown in Meath.
