The Director of the Dublin Region Homeless Executive says the flow of families becoming homeless must be stopped.

Cathal Morgan says there are currently 677 families with 1,400 children in emergency accommodation in the Dublin region.

The homeless sector has just announced 500 additional emergency shelter places for people in Dublin between now and Christmas, as part of the Cold Weather Initiative.

It includes 195 additional beds for individuals, 55 units for couples and plans for 80 more rooms for families.

Cathal Morgan, Director of the Dublin Region Homeless Executive told Newstalk Breakfast the system cannot cope with the numbers:

CEO of the Father Peter McVerry Trust, Pat Doyle says the extra beds are welcome but it is still not getting to the root of the issue:

His organisation says that in the first nine months of 2015 the homeless sector in Dublin has moved 729 people out of homelessness - an increase of over 200 on the same period last year.

The Trust is calling for an increase in rent supplement rates, rent certainty and the immediate provision of more modular and traditional housing.
