A leading motoring organisation is calling on the government to intervene to stop car insurance premiums rocketing.

The AA - which is also an insurance provider - says premiums have risen almost 35% since January 2014.

It says industry transparency, regulatory changes and zero tolerance for fraud are required to tackle the issue of spiraling motor insurance costs.

Chief Executive of the AA, Brendan Nevin, told Newstalk Breakfast that standardising court awards for claims would help.

He also wants automatic license and insurance checks to be introduced:
