The Brazilian Supreme Court has cleared the way for the extradition of former solicitor Michael Lynn back to Ireland.

Mr Lynn, who fled the country in 2007, faces over 30 allegations in relation to the collapse of his property business.

His extradition follows a ruling by Brazil's Supreme Court last night.

It is understood he is to be handed over to the Brazilian Justice Ministry, who will implement an extradition request from Ireland.

It was 2013 when Brazilian federal police arrested Mr Lynn, acting on behalf of Interpol.

Police swooped while he was in a shopping centre.

Legal affairs correspondent with the Sunday Business Post, Francesca Comyn, says it is likely proceedings will get underway in the next number of weeks.

"The decision was made by the Supreme Court in December of 2014 - but then his lawyers asked for, basically, a review of that decision and that's taken a long time", she told Newstalk Breakfast.

"Apparently 50,000 cases go before the Supreme Court of Brazil every year, so there's no surprise then that it's only now they've been getting around to issuing a decision on his case".

"And in the next few weeks there'll be arrangements made, and members of the extradition unit - guards - will go over and bring him back" she added.
