The Dáil will host its first-ever Youth Assembly on Climate Change today.

Nearly 160 young people between the ages of 10 and 17-years-old will debate Ireland’s climate action efforts.

The number of delegates has been set at 157 to mirror the number of TDs in the Dáil and all 26 counties south of the border will be represented.

The assembly will be chaired by Ceann Comhairle Séan O Fearghail – as would be the case if it was a regular Dáil sitting.

Earlier this week a survey found that 86% of Irish people agree that climate change is the result of human activity.

However, nearly half of those surveyed said the information provided on climate action in Ireland is confusing and unclear.

The survey, commissioned by Science Foundation Ireland for Science Week, found that over a third of people are willing to eat less meat in an effort to make a positive change.

Only one-in-ten said they would consider a vegetarian diet; however, that number rose to 17% for people aged between 18 and 34-years-old.

This morning’s youth assembly is all part of celebrations commemorating 100 years of the Dáil.

It will be broadcast on Oireachtas TV.
