A five-year-old boy has died after falling from a trailer on a farm in County Roscommon.

Gardaí said they were called to the farm in Castlerea at around 5:30pm yesterday evening.

The child was pronounced dead at the scene and a post-mortem examination is due to take place at Roscommon University Hospital.

Jim O'Connor, the chairman of Roscommon IFA, says it's a terrible tragedy.

“My condolences to the family of the little child that is dead,” he said.”

“The immediate and the extended family. Incidents like this really do put life into perspective and they are always a tragedy.

“This is one of the saddest things that I have heard in a long, long time.”

The Health and Safety Authority has been informed of the death and will conduct an investigation.
