A woman's body has been found in an elevator in China, one month after power to the lift was switched off.

The incident happened in the city of Xi'an in Shaanxi province.

Officials say two maintenance workers cut off the power on January 30th to carry out a check. It is reported that they failed to check whether anybody was in the lift at the time.

The body of the woman (43) - believed to have been a resident living by herself in the building - was discovered on March 1st when the maintenance team returned to carry out repairs, The Guardian and BBC report.

Authorities say the death is being treated as involuntary manslaughter, with the failure to check if anybody was in the lift deemed to be "gross negligence".

A number of people are said to have been arrested in connection with the incident.
