A woman with no flying experience was forced to crash land a plane after the pilot – her husband – fell unconscious in the cockpit during a flight.

Air traffic controllers at Seville airport had to guide the woman through the process as she attempted to safely take the plane down from 3,000m.The controller on duty at the time had knowledge of how to fly the light aircraft the woman was controlling.

A helicopter was also used to help guide the woman.

She landed the plane some 3km away from the airport runway, in an orange grove.

An emergency services spokesman said the woman “did not know how to fly, so they guided her from the control tower to see if she could control the plane until landing it at the airport,” AFP reports.

A recording of a conversation between the air traffic controller and the woman shows the controller reassuring the woman, saying to: ““The plane can fly without any problem. Don’t worry the plane is not going to crash. Don’t worry you are going to land without any problem.”

The woman was seriously injured, suffering burns and contusions, while her husband has since died, although it is unclear if he had died before the plane landed
