A protester has been injured during a stand-off between demonstrators and Irish Water workers at a housing estate in Togher in Cork. The incident happened at the Ashbrook Heights estate at around 11am this morning as workers tried to begin installing meters.

Residents there have also decided to take a case to the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) over safety concerns they have.

John O'Donovan - the man who was injured - spoke to the 'Neil Prenderville Show' on Red FM as he waited for the ambulance to arrive.

Meanwhile gardai were earlier called to the housing estate in Togher this morning as the protests continued.

Residents of Ashbrook Heights in Lehanaghamore and Elmvale in Wilton formed blockades as Irish Water staff attempted to work.

Suzanne O'Flynn - who lives in the Ashbrook Heights estate - earlier told the 'Neil Prenderville Show' on Red FM that tensions in the estate are rising.

As the government struggles to settle outstanding issues, water meter protests have spread across Dublin and Cork.

In the capital, people in Neilstown west Dublin are now vowing to block meter installation specialists. Residents of the Rowlagh estate protested after being told that meters will be installed from next month.

The protest comes a week after people living in Raheny on the northside of the city also demonstrated against the meters.

Earlier this week a second protest began on the housing estate in Togher, Co. Cork.

While residents at Palmbury joined their neighbours in Ashbrook Heights by demonstrating against the new charges.

These residents told Red FM how the situation escalated this morning and why they are standing firm in their opposition to the installation of the meters.
