Every Christmas in Spain, people play a cheeky homage to their favourite celebrities and world leaders, honouring a centuries-old tradition that sees a defecating figurine added to the traditional Nativity scene. And this year, Irish rocker Bono’s crap has been recognised in time for the 2015 holiday season.

The caganer, which is Catalan for ‘crapper’, finds his origins in festive celebrations in the cribs from Catalonia, where Christians have been placing a defecating character behind Mary and Joseph, as well as the baby Jesus, for centuries. The caganer is said to symbolise fertility, as well as to bring good luck for the new year to come.

The traditional caganer is usually a young peasant boy, dressed in traditional Catalonian garb, wearing a red barretina cap and smoking on a pipe.

But as the tradition has spread across Spain, businesses have found that there’s cash to be made from the crapper, fashioning satirical and ironic ones out of politicians, royalty, religious icons, Hollywood stars, and fictional characters.

Outside of Barcelona, near Girona, a family-run business has started selling celebrity versions, as well as the classic caganer, and this year has finally included and Irishman in the crop of crappers. Others to be honoured in 2015 include British Prime Minister David Cameron, King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain, and German chancellor Angela Merkel.
