A teenage girl injured at Hook Head in Co Wexford last weekend has died.

The girl was one of two teenagers who were winched to safety by the rescue helicopter after they were swept out to sea by a freak wave.

Both teenagers were taken to hospital. They were part of a scouting troop from Dublin.

Two managed to swim ashore and two others were rescued by the Waterford-based coastguard helicopter.

Gardaí have this afternoon confirmed that the teenage girl has died.

The Air Accident Investigation Unit (AAIU) has launched an investigation into the incident and made an appeal earlier this week to any members of the public with video footage of the rescue to come forward.
