A Status Yellow snow and ice warning will remain in place around the country until Saturday.

Met Éireann said it will be very cold this week with showers of hail, sleet and snow, frequent across the southwest, west and north, where some significant accumulations are possible this evening and overnight.

There will be widespread frost with icy stretches on untreated surfaces.

There is the potential for further significant snowfall in places on Thursday.

TODAY

Very cold with widespread frost and icy patches this morning and with lying snow in places.

All areas will have good sunny spells today and the wintry showers will become more isolated by afternoon.

Top temperatures 3C to 5C generally – but up to 7C on the southwest coast.

TONIGHT

Very cold tonight.

Frost will set in quickly after dark, becoming severe, with fairly widespread ice.

Mist and fog will form also, with some freezing fog in places.

It will become breezy and rather cloudy later – which should help to clear some of the fog and reduce the ice over the southern half of the country.

Some heavy rain will develop over Munster before dawn, with sleet or hill snow in places.

Lowest temperatures -2C to -4C.
