While starring in the Biblical epic Cleopatra would prove to be one of the biggest hits in Elizabeth Taylor’s career, her performance offered considerably more depth than the one her dazed waxwork carries out in a Bible museum.
Bible Walk in Mansfield, Ohio, is the world’s most star-studded biblical gallery, with many famous faces and celebrity likenesses helping to tell the word of God. The museum features more than 300 retired waxworks from now defunct museums, staged into recreations of the best-known stories and parables from the Christian book.
British royals Princes Philip and Charles, heir to the throne, feature as an angel and Abel, respectively, while Tom Cruise appears in his biggest role to date – as the messiah, Jesus Christ. Steve McQueen, John Travolta, George Harrison, Marlon Brando, and Burt Lancaster all help retell various biblical stories.
The museum has now gained a cult status among tourists, many of whom flock to Bible Walk to spot the celebrities in the recreations. According to the Daily Mail, museum director Julia Mott-Hardin tries not to promote the celebrity angle of Bible Walk, but that word of mouth has helped the Ohio museum to reach an unexpected audience.
“I’ve had calls from people who wanted to take the tour,” says Mott-Hardin. “But only if I accompanied them to point out the celebrities. I refused. The museum is about glorifying God and his works.”
The official tour of Museum Walk takes in all 70 Bible scenes, and takes in four different biblical motifs: the Life of Christ, the Miracles of the Old Testament, the Museum of Christian Martyrs, and the Heart of the Reformation.
To complete a full walk-though, guided by Ms Mott-Hardin, takes approximately three hours to complete. Scrolling through our gallery below takes considerably less:
