Seven-year-old children are not renowned for having the most diverse culinary palates, which makes the following video all the more fun.

One Saturday in September, the New York Times Magazine sent six Brooklyn kids to dine at Daniel, a swanky eatery in Manhattan that has two Michelin stars.

Once seated, the six were waited on by five of the restaurants staff, chewing and chomping their way through the seven courses on the €175 tasting menu, from Aleppo seed-crusted sea scallops to squab terrine with pistachio and Calvados.

Chef Daniel Boulud says his goal was for the children “to really discover a lot of flavour, a lot of layers, a lot of texture,” as they tucked into the kind of haute cuisine only the most ardent of foodies normally dine on.

The Times brought in Jeffrey Blitz, the Oscar-winning director of Spellbound, to film the kids experience, as they went from sitting in their second-grade class in PS 295 to sitting at a table in one of New York’s first-grade restaurants.
