Twenty years after the biggest blockbuster of 1996, the first trailer has emerged for the sequel to Independence Day, the alien invasion movie that propelled Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum to superstar status at the expense of many of the world’s most iconic monuments and building being blown to smithereens.

Independence Day: Resurgence will blast the box office next summer, and while Smith will not be reprising his role from the original, the new movie brings back Goldblum, Judd Hirsch and Bill Pullman, who played President Thomas J Whitmore in the original. Joining the cast will be franchise newcomers Liam Hemsworth, Charlotte Gainsbourg, William Fitchtner, and Maika Monroe.

While the plot is being kept under wraps for now, the trailer sees Goldblum’s David Levinson say that he has spent the intermittent 20 years preparing the world’s community for another invasion by the alien species from the first film, adapting their technology to use in the forthcoming fight. Pullman’s former president appears much more dishevelled, but gets to make a rousing speech much like the one in the first movie.
