With the pressure of seeking re-election off his shoulders Barack Obama is enjoying the freedom afforded to him as an observer of the US Presidential race for the first time in twelve years. And he’s been taking some time to get in a spot of stand-up comedy, with the Republican party as his target.

Speaking at a Democrat fundraiser in New York on Monday, Obama took aim at the Republicans on a whole range of issues, foregoing a respect he may have afforded them in previous years as he attacked and mocked the GOP's presidential primary candidates on a variety of issues.

The US President compares their attitude to climate change to that of someone facing the same diabetes diagnosis 99 times but insisting it’s a conspiracy (orchestrated by Obama).

“If you go to 100 doctors and 99 of them tell you ‘You’ve got diabetes, you’ve got to stop eating bacon and doughnuts every day and we have to monitor your health and we’ve gotta fix this’ - you wouldn’t say ‘That’s a conspiracy, they’re making that up! All 99 of those doctors got together with Obama to try and prevent me from having bacon and doughnuts!’”

On foreign policy he wondered about their credentials for high stakes negotiation with Russia and China when they can’t handle the CNBC moderator at the Republican debates after several candidates have complained about the questioning they faced from the moderators in a recent primary debate.

“Have you noticed the everyone of these candidates say 'Obama’s weak, Putin’s kicking sand in his face, when I talk to Putin he’s going to straighten out.'”

“Then it turns out they can’t handle a bunch of CNBC moderators? Let me tell you, if you can’t handle those guys, then I don’t think the Chinese and the Russians are going to be too worried about you.”

Obama attacked the Republican candidates from several angles, saying they “occupy a different reality”.
