After starting in Stanislaus National Forest on August 17th, the massive wildfire has so far engulfed over 800 square kilometres of land. The 2013 'Rim Fire' is already one of the ten worst fires in Californian history. Thousands of firefighters are trying to battle, although are facing challenging terrain and wind conditions. Currently described as '32% contained', it is hoped the fire will be fully contained by some time in early to mid-September.

One of the areas affected has been the iconic Yosemite National Park, with the fire having spread into some of the more isolated regions of the vast woodland. However, the famed Yosemite Valley is not said to be under threat, and the park remains open to visitors.

Despite a majority of Yosemite land being safe from the flames, visitors and workers have still been able to witness the sheer scale of the Rim Fire from the safety of the National Park. Yosemite staff have posted up a timelapse video that illustrates in no uncertain terms the dangers wildfires pose to woodlands and other landscapes around the world.
