Fianna Fáil is calling for the scrapping of plans for a revaluation of the Local Property Tax next year.
The party says the revaluation - due at the end of next year - is a time bomb for householders as property prices have risen so much since the last valuation in 2013.
Currently the tax is fixed at 2013 house prices.
Legislation to stop the revaluation will be brought before the Dáil or Seanad in the coming weeks.
Fianna Fáil's Senator Darragh O'Brien and TD Michael McGrath discussed their proposals earlier today.
Finance spokesperson Michael McGrath says the "reality is that a lot of people are staring at a very hefty hike in the property tax bill in the next couple of years. It is a major worry coming on top of the water charges, coming on top of the full year property tax".
