Themed weddings are a brave choice, but an Islamic State-themed wedding must be the bravest (or worst) choice of all.
Despite increasing friction between IS and Egypt following the killing of 21 of their citizens in Libya, one Egyptian medical student decided to throw a farcical militant-style ceremony.
Ahmed Shehata, 25, arranged for his relatives to dress as IS fighters and kidnap his bride. Choreographed to IS' infamous anthem, they placed Shaimaa Deif, 23, in a cage resembling that in which a captured Jordanian pilot was burned alive last month.
The stunt, which was a surprise for the bride and many guests, went viral in Egypt, and not all thought the event was in good taste.
"We aren’t making light of other people’s blood. We’re showing that we’re not scared, and that Egyptians meet any crisis with laughter and comedy," Deif told the Guardian.
"Whatever happens because of this [massacre], you are not going to scare us," Shehata said to the paper. “We will scare you, because our enjoyment, our happiness and our weddings will continue whatever you do."
