Small town traditions throw up some interesting events all over the world - from Killorglin's own Puck Fair to Brockworth's Cheese Roll.
This weekend it was the Australian town of Chinchilla which made headlines for its annual Melon Festival.
Activities included seed spitting, melon bungee and melon ironman. However it was melon skiing - where competitors place their feet in hollowed out watermelons and get pulled by a rope - that stole the show.
The town's population tripled to 15,000 as visitors flocked from all over Australia to take part.
About 20 tonnes of melon were used in the festival, with about a quarter being eaten by atendees.
Festival president Doug McNally spoke to the Toowoomba Chronicle about the weekend's success:
That was our biggest event by at least a few thousand people.
"It's not often there are traffic jams in Chinchilla, but it was gridlocked around town on Friday afternoon."
