With five days to go before Apple tries to tempt you with a shiny new iPhone, the rumour mill is churning out stories of U2’s involvement with the project.

While Apple launches come and go every year, next Tuesday’s is gearing up to be the biggest ever – promising an awful lot more than a middle-aged man in a black turtleneck jumper showcasing the latest tech you’ll be eyeing enviously till the 6S surfaces.

Last week, Cult of Mac reported that a mystery white box, as tall as a three-story building, had appeared at California’s Flint Center, where the world debut of the much-anticipated phone is due to take place.

Surrounded by a cavalcade of security guards and green fences, the space is now tipped to be housing the stage where legendary Irish rockers U2 will perform.

Now the Internet is compiling a list of evidence to back up the speculation.

Firstly, there’s the fact that U2 made a music video is Dublin recently, closing down the city’s Samuel Beckett Bridge for a weekend. Clapper boards spotted during the shoot had the project title as ‘Summer Nights’, and Mark Romanek, who has worked with the band in the past, was named on directing duties.

Then, with a new album ready to drop soon, a tweet from RT-columnist Bryan MacDonald says that the new phone will come with U2’s music pre-loaded into its iTunes.

U2 are a safe bet for Apple, a company in need of some positive buzz. Apple's shares are at their lowest since January, after actress Jennifer Lawrence and model Kate Upton had photos from their individual iCloud accounts leaked online in a hacking scandal.

But the leak doesn't seem to have put consumers off the new iPhone - with queues already forming outside the tech giant's flagship Fifth Avenue store in New York. The previous record of 18 days looks set to be beaten, as the phone is not predicted to go on sale until a fortnight after its launch next week.

This wouldn’t be the first time the Irish band had collaborated with Apple, having previously launched a U2 iPod a decade ago.
