Two Palestinian teenagers have been killed after they allegedly fired on Israeli soldiers in the West Bank.

An army statement said the pair attacked an Israeli patrol with rocks near the city Jenin before firing on soldiers with a rifle.

"The force responded to the shooting and fired towards the attackers, resulting in their deaths," the statement added.

The Palestinian health ministry says the two killed were both 15 years old.

It comes a day after a 17-year-old Palestinian girl was shot dead by soldiers in the city of Hebron after reportedly trying to stab a soldier.

More than 170 Palestinians have been killed since early since the latest outbreak of violence in October, with Israeli authorities having described a majority as assailants.

At least 27 Israelis have also been killed, Al Jazeera reports.

The violence has been driven by Palestinian anger over Israel's occupation of the West Bank and disputes over access to the Al Aqsa mosque compound in the Old City of Jerusalem.

Israel has blamed Palestinians for the outbreak of violence.
