Two men have been arrested in Dublin after a firearm and ammunition were found in a car they were travelling in.

Gardaí had received a report of suspicious activity at Carton Way, Ballymun at around 5 o'clock yesterday evening.

They searched the vehicle and found a 9mm handgun in the footwell of the front passenger seat, along with with 3 rounds of 9mm ammunition and a silver silencer.

Both men - aged 25 and 22 - were taken to Coolock Garda station, where they are detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

This means they can be held for up to 72 hours.
