Two people have died following a crash around the Clare-Limerick border overnight.

There is widespread shock at the discovery of the bodies in a burnt out car on the outskirts of Limerick overnight.

Sources said it appeared the car had hit a steel barrier and a wall before it went on fire at Quinpool, Co Clare.

Two men, also believed to have been in the car at the time, were seriously injured.

Emergency services were alerted shortly after midnight.

When they arrived here they discovered a car on fire and two men seriously injured on the ground near the vehicle.

When the fire was extinguished the car's shell revealed two bodies inside it.

Both are believed to be male and from the Limerick area.

Sources say it appears the car left the road near a bend before colliding with a barrier and the wall of a nearby house.

Gardaí at this stage do not believe any other vehicle was involved.

There is widespread shock in the quiet rural parish situated on the Clare-Limerick border.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to contact them, particularly anyone who was driving in the area between 12.00am and 1.00am.

Anyone with information can contact Mayorstone Park Garda station on 061-456-980 or the Garda Confidential Line at 1800-666-111.
