Gardaí are investigating whether a fake batch of Xanax tablets led to the deaths of two women at a homeless hostel in County Offaly.

A 44-year-old woman and a 19-year-old woman died after being found unresponsive at the hostel in Tullamore town on Sunday and Monday.

Two men, aged 23 and 32-years-old, were taken to hospital – one of whom is in a serious condition.

Gardaí said the results of toxicology reports will determine the course of the inquiries; however, they are investigating whether a batch of fake Xanax tablets purchased online may be responsible.

Local Fianna Fáil Councillor Tony McCormack said there have been issues with drugs in the town in the past – but never a tragedy like this.

“This is shocking,” he said. “You know, if it is drugs, it just goes to show you that drugs and alcohol, they know no bounds.”

“Young people like this are being affected and they have no control over what it is they have taken.

“They have no idea where it has come from. Things like this do happen on occasion and unfortunately on this occasion it has happened in Tullamore.”

He said everyone in Tullamore is shocked at the news.
