Tributes have been paid to the "Hollywood legend" Kirk Douglas, who has died at the age of 103.
He has been described as a 'legend from the golden age of movies' by Michael Douglas, the veteran actor's eldest son.
Kirk's screen career began in the 1940s and continued into the 2000s.
Some of his best-known performances include his iconic lead roles in the 1960 classic Spartacus and the dark drama Ace in the Hole.
Over the course of his career, Kirk Douglas picked up three Oscar nominations for best actor - before ultimately being awarded an honorary Oscar in 1996 for his contributions to cinema.
Kirk is survived by his wife of more than six decades, Anne Buydens, and three of his four sons.
Tributes
In a statement, Michael Douglas announced his father's death with "tremendous sadness".
He said: "To the world, he was a legend, an actor from the golden age of movies who lived well into his golden years, a humanitarian whose commitment to justice and the causes he believed in set a standard for all of us to aspire to.
"But to me and my brothers Joel and Peter he was simply Dad."
Michael's wife, the actress Catherine Zeta Jones, also paid tribute, saying: "To my darling Kirk, I shall love you for the rest of my life. I miss you already. Sleep tight..."
Director Steven Spielberg said Kirk Douglas has left behind a "breath-taking body of work".
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences also paid tribute:
“I wanted to be an actor ever since I was a kid in the second grade. I did a play, and my mother made a black apron, and I played a shoemaker. After the performance, [my father] gave me my first Oscar: an ice cream cone.” -Kirk Douglas
