A young boy who was found unconscious in a swimming pool at a Cork hotel yesterday has died.
The boy (3) has been named locally as Ronan Kennedy from Templederry in Co Tipperary.
He was holidaying with his parents, John and Bridget, and his two brothers when the incident happened at the Quality Hotel in Redbarn.
Two lifeguards took him from the water and he was rushed to Cork University Hospital before being transferred to Temple Street Children's Hospital in Dublin, where he has died.
Gardaí in Youghal are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In a statement, management at the Quality Hotel say they are shocked and upset at the events.
"We are deeply saddened to learn that he has since passed away. The hotel management and staff are very shocked and upset by this event and their thoughts are with the little boy's family," it says.
The hotel says a full investigation is currently underway.
It adds that a counsellor has been made available for guests and staff.
