The Tánaiste's intervention in the referendum on reducing the age of presidential candidates is being described as "bizarre".

Colum Kenny, Professor of Communications at Dublin City University, says Joan Burton's admission that the vote is likely to be defeated shows how insulting the referendum is.

On Friday, we will be asked to vote on whether to reduce the age requirement at which someone can run for the highest office in the state from 35 to 21 years of age. None of the parties are actively promoting the referendum.

Professor Kenny says it's completely inept, and that the referendum doesn't take the Constitution seriously:

Opinion polls suggest the referendum is in for a heavy defeat. According to the Irish Times/IPSOS poll taken last Wednesday and Thursday, 64% of the 1,200 voters surveyed said they intend to vote No.

Earlier this week, a Fianna Fáil Councillor also accused the Government of running a completely 'inept' campaign on the proposal to reduce the age of candidates eligible to run for President.

Jim O'Callaghan said that there have been no posters, speeches or leaflets from the proposing parties telling us why we should support this proposed amendment.
