A Tiktoker from Belgium has gone viral for showing up to his own funeral, after faking his death to find out how people really felt about him.

In Belgium, a 45-year-old Tiktoker, David Baerten, also known as Ragnar le Fou on TikTok, has gone viral for deciding to prank his friends and family members by pretending to have died.

The Tiktoker, along with his wife and children, decided to spread the news of his passing via a fake social tribute posted by his daughter.

"Rest in peace, Daddy. I will never stop thinking about you," she said.

"Why is life so unfair? Why you? You were going to be a grandfather, and you still had your whole life ahead of you.

"I love you! We love you! We will never forget you."

The funeral

Attendees were invited to the staged funeral, near the city of Liege in Belgium, and was attended by a number of Mr Baerten's friends and family.

As mourners waited for the ceremony to begin, a helicopter arrived on the premises, carrying Mr Baerten and a camera crew.

Social media clips of the instance depict a number of confused responses from attendees, while others are pictured embracing Mr Baerten in an emotional exchange.

Why fake a funeral?

Mr Baerten fakes his own funeral because he felt "underappreciated" by his wider family, and wanted to know how they would react to his death, according to The Times.

"What I see in my family often hurts me, I never get invited to anything. Nobody sees me," he said.

"We all grew apart. I felt unappreciated.

"That's why I wanted to give them a life lesson and show them that you shouldn't wait until someone is dead to meet up with them."

Since faking his own death, the Tiktoker has claimed that the prank has changed his friends' and family's perspective.

"It proves who really cares about me," he said.

"Those who didn't come did contact me to meet up. So in a way, I did win."
