A 26-year-old man remains in police custody in Austria this morning after a driver ploughed into a crowd in the country's second largest city yesterday.
Witnesses claim the man then jumped out of the car and began attacking people with a knife in Gratz.
Three people died in the attack, while another 34 were injured - 10 seriously.
An SUV was driven along Herrengasse street in Graz around 12.25pm and hit a cyclist and another person before striking the crowd.
Doctors on the scene attempted to save the lives of at least one of the victims, but nothing could be done, it was reported.
The governor of Graz, Hermann Schuetzenhoefer, described the man as a "deranged" lone assassin and said the attack was deliberate.
Mr Schuetzenhoefer said he was a 26-year-old Austrian who was "mentally disorientated" and acting alone.
He said 10 people were seriously injured and at least one was critical.
Police said there were no indications of a terrorist attack, and the suspect was apparently distressed over personal problems when he targeted his victims.
Four helicopters and 50 ambulances were sent to the area.
The authorities were said to be stretched because of the Austrian F1 Grand Prix which is being held at nearby Spielberg.
Police have set up a cordon in the area where the incident occurred.
Graz is the second-largest city in Austria.
