It has emerged that three members of staff at the Department of Social Protection are under investigation over alleged welfare fraud.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has heard that an estimated €1.2 million was inappropriately paid to a number of individuals.

One member of staff has been fired, while another two are suspended, as a garda investigation is underway.

Niamh O'Donoghue from the Department of Social Protection explained the circumstances.
