A vigil will be held this Friday for a cow that was shot dead by armed police in North Tyneside on Friday after it escaped from Rising Sun Country Park.

The cow, nicknamed Bessie, was reportedly grazing in the middle of a field in Newcastle before police opened fire on it.

A police helicopter was joined by a squadron of police cars as UK armed forces tracked and killed the cow who was said to be harming no one.

Bessie was one of three cows who escaped from the park however after two were recaptured the third, being Bessie, was then shot.

A Facebook page has been set up in memory of the fallen cow which, at the time of writing, has over 7,000 likes.

Creator of the Facebook homage, Dave Turner, told BBC Radio 2 that the cow was just eating a bit of grass.

"It wasn't doing anything, it was just eating a bit of grass - it probably got sick of the grass it was eating elsewhere, it heard about a nice new patch, went down and started grazing, and the next thing is police turn up and start firing at it."

A spokesperson for the Northumbria Police told the BBC that Bessie was killed after becoming "increasingly distressed" and "causing dangerous and severe obstructions" on a major road.
