The Turkish government has been criticised for the last few years for its failure to prevent thousands of foreign jihadists - including Isis members - from entering Syria and overrunning it with warped Islamist ideology.

Turkey’s border with Syria is more than 500km long, and very difficult to police. The Turkish government has stepped up efforts of late, and - while foreign fighters still enter through there - Turkey also has an open door policy supporting the Syrians who are fleeing the war inside.

Irish NGO GOAL is giving aid to hundreds of refugees leaving their homes. It is also the only Irish aid agency that works inside Syria amidst sectarian violence and the Assad regime's use of barrel bombs and air strikes.
