Tomorrow is World Meningitis Day and Meningitis Research Foundation is highlighting that Ireland has the highest incidence of group B invasive meningococcal disease (MenB), per capita, in Europe and the second highest in the world.

Brian Cavanagh works with the foundation. His daughter Elizabeth died from meningitis in 1993.

Today, he spoke to Newstalk Lunchtime about what happened the day his daughter died.

"She came home one day feeling a bit under the weather.

"She took the day off the next day and was more concerned about missing school projects and other commitments than anything else.

"I had a bit of business in Limerick but as soon as I got there from the train, Rosemary, my wife rang me to say that Elizabeth's health had deteriorated very quickly and she was now in Temple Street hospital.

"Frankly, there wasn't even a chance to say goodbye to her. When I got there probably nine hours later that evening, she was totally dependent on life support and died the next day. The speed of it really is devastating, how quickly it all happened.

Brian now campaigns for the use of a vaccine. He told Jonathan Healy: "It is a very effective vaccine and it is really the only way to go.

"Next year, we can confidently predict, the figures show it, there will be over 200 cases next year and over 20 deaths next year. It will be a double tragedy this time around.

"One, to lose a child, I can tell you, is a terrible tragedy, but to think this time we could have done something about it and we didn't would really be the worse tragedy of all.
