The final trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been released - a day after advance tickets went on sale in cinemas.

The two-and-a-half minute teaser debuted on US television late on Monday night, halfway through an American football game between the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles.

It was released online simultaneously - and soon created a buzz on social media among fans excited for the film's December release date.

Stalwarts of the Star Wars franchise - including Harrison Ford's character, Han Solo - appear in the clip, along with a couple of new faces.

Luke Skywalker, played by Mark Hamill is noticeably absent once again though.

The film is a continuation of the saga created by George Lucas and is set 30 years after Star Wars: Episode VI - Return Of The Jedi.

Directed by JJ Abrams, it also stars Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels and Max von Sydow.

Glimpses of the film have trickled out since the first teaser trailer was unveiled in November 2014. The second trailer, released in April has had over 64 million views on YouTube.

Other footage, including a behind-the-scenes reel shown at Comic-Con, have left fans hungry for more and the full-length trailer is the most substantial insight into the finished movie so far despite it giving little away about the plot.

Star Wars: Episode VII is released in Ireland on 17 December with special midnight screenings the night before.
