Here's how British papers illustrated Gerry Adams and Prince Charles' handshake

On Prince Charles' royal visit to Ireland the handshake between himself and Sinn Féin leader, Gerry Adams, took centre stage yesterday.

The meeting between the two was the first ever between a British royal and a Sinn Féin leader. Mr. Adams described it as a 'symbolic' moment.

The interaction between the two has been immortalised by satirists across the UK in cartoons highlighting the past behind yesterday's handshake.

 

The New York Times makes the #MarRef front page news

Today marks the final full day of campaigning in the referendums on same-sex marriage and the age of presidential candidates, before a broadcast moratorium takes effect.

People on both sides of the arguments have until lunchtime tomorrow to try and persuade voters over the airwaves to take their side.

But the international edition of the New York Times has taken the opportunity to make the marriage referendum front-page news, featuring a mural by Irish artist Joe Caslin.

JD Wetherspoon has announced mixed figures for the six months ended January 25th - revenue increased by 9 percent, but its operating profit fell by 1.1 percent to £55.1m.

The chain is planning to cut the costs of coffee and breakfast meals in a bid to triple sales over the next year and a half. Wetherspoons currently sells some 50m coffees and 24m breakfasts per-year.

The Manchester United manager was speaking at the clubs end of season awards

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal entertained the crowd at the Manchester United Player of the Year Awards last night.

The Dutch manager had the crowd in stitches, telling the crowd to "pay attention to the manager" and that he was disappointed in the fans for not applauding "the saxaphone lady" at the ceremony. He also told the fans who close the side are to Chelsea after this seasons expected fourth place finish.

A Dublin father has told Newstalk Breakfast how he believes the marriage referendum is important to "blow away the dark clouds of homophobia." Enda Morgan's comments come as both sides of the debate look to make their final points on air ahead of tomorrow's broadcast moratorium.

This morning, Mr Morgan recalled how his daughter Rachel came out to her parents five years ago, and has gone on to be very happy and meet the partner of her dreams.
