Mrs Brown's Brendan O'Carroll donates Christmas dinner to 2,500 families

Brendan O'Carroll, star of Mrs Brown's Boys, has donated 2,500 Christmas dinners to charity.

The comedian has paid for the East region of the St Vincent De Paul (SVP) to supply Christmas dinners for 2,500 families. The food will be distributed to families in Dublin and Kildare.

Liam Casey, President of SVP East Region, told Independent.ie that the donation is "unbelievable".

Limerick judge orders man to leave witness box over 'Ryanair-style' shirt

A man has been ordered to leave the witness box in a Limerick court for wearing a 'Ryanair'-style shirt.

The Irish Examiner reports the judge openly disapproved of the man's open-necked shirt.

"We want the right kind of dress and proper decorum here. This is not a Ryanair kind of show we are running here", he said.

14 killed in California shooting

Upwards of 14 people may have been killed, and another 14 injured, in a mass shooting in California.

Shortly after 11am local time (7pm Irish time) gunmen entered a social services centre in San Bernardino and opened fire.

Speaking at a press conference at the scene, Police Chief Jared Burguan said that “We do have some preliminary numbers of upwards of 14 people that are dead and upwards of 14 people that are injured. They are preliminary numbers.”

17 people still missing since last year, as Ireland marks Missing Persons Day

Today marks Missing Persons Day - to commemorate those who have gone missing, and recognise the lasting trauma for their families and friends.

Last year, 9,179 people were reported missing here - 17 of these have not yet been found.

A ceremony took place at Farmleigh House in Dublin this morning, hosted by Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald.

She was joined at the event by the Garda Commissioner, Nóirín O'Sullivan.

Garda killer Pearse McAuley sentenced to 12 years, four suspended, for stabbing wife

Garda killer Pearse McAuley has been sentenced to 12 years in prison, with four suspended, for stabbing his wife in front of their two young sons last Christmas Eve.

In June, the 50-year-old admitted falsely imprisoning Pauline Tully and assault causing her serious harm at the family home in Cavan.

He also pleaded guilty to the production of a knife, which he used to stab her 13 times, and threatening to kill her brother when he came to her rescue.
