It's understood a 15 year old teenager got into the taxi and threatened the taxi driver-a 36 year old man - with a knife. He demanded money and told the taxi driver to get out of the car.

Gardai say the teenager drove off in the car in the direction of the city.

It collided with another vehicle on the Old Cabra road in Dublin 7 at around 5.45am. The youth fled the scene but was arrested by Gardai a short distance away.

He was taken to Rathmines Garda station where he is being detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. No one was injured during the incident.

The incident is the second hijacking of a car in Dublin i recent days. A man hijacked a car with a woman and her two children inside in Terenure on Friday.

The man forced the woman to drive to her home to get bank cards, before instructing her to go to the ATM and withdraw cash.

The woman and children were uninjured in Friday's incident.
