Passengers using the Taxsaver scheme who have been unable to use public transport during the lockdown are to be offered free travel when they return to work.

The National Transport Authority said the free travel will be equal to the length of time passengers have been unable to use their ticket.

Passengers can choose to use their months-in-lieu as soon as they return to work or hold of and use them at a later date.

Anyone who is not returning to their old job will be offered a refund for the remainder of their ticket plus the weeks they have already missed.

Passengers who are returning to the same workplace can also take advantage of the refund should they choose to do so.

The NTA said the plan is still being put together; however, the basic principles have been agreed.

Transport Minister Shane Ross said: “I am pleased that the NTA are making these arrangements for public transport customers who have been unable to use their TaxSaver tickets due to the current restrictions on travel.

“Times are tough for many at the moment; financially challenging as well as stressful and I welcome this development in assisting customers.”

The Taxsaver scheme aims to encourage commuters to use public transport by offering reduced fares on bus, train and Luas journeys.
