A suspicious package, reportedly sent to a restaurant owned by actor Robert De Niro in New York, has been removed from the scene for analysis.

The property in Greenwich Street, Manhattan, houses the Tribeca Grill.

US media reported the package was addressed to the Hollywood actor.

The package in Tribeca was similar to those that contained explosives, NBC News reported.

It comes as US President Donald Trump launched a new attack on the media - hours after bombs were sent to the offices of news network CNN and the homes of several high-profile political rivals.

On Wednesday, pipe bombs were intercepted on their way to the homes of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

Explosive devices were also sent to California congresswoman Maxine Waters and to former attorney general Eric Holder, whose package was reportedly addressed incorrectly and re-directed to Florida congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz who had been named as the return address.

De Niro has been an outspoken critic of Mr Trump, declaring at one stage he would like to punch the president in the face.

The actor, who won an Oscar for his starring role in the boxing movie 'Raging Bull', received a standing ovation at the Tony Awards in June when he punched his fists in the air and said: "I'm going to say one thing - f*** Trump!"

The US president responded by tweeting: "Robert De Niro, a very Low IQ individual, has received too many shots to the head by real boxers in movies.

"I watched him last night and truly believe he may be 'punch-drunk'."
