David Cameron has been appointed UK foreign secretary in a shock cabinet reshuffle in London.

The former prime minister was seen entering Downing Street this morning shortly after the reshuffle started.

Mr Cameron is no longer an elected politician - having stood down as an MP in 2016 - and while a UK government minister does not in theory have to be a member of either House of Parliament, in recent years such ministers have been appointed to the House of Lords in order for them to be accountable to parliament.

Britain’s King Charles has also made Mr Cameron a baron for life this morning.

It comes after the UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman was sacked from her position this morning over her newspaper column criticising the Metropolitan Police's handling of a pro-Palestine march in London.

She accused the London police force “playing favourites” with how it handles controversial protests – claiming that it shows a more lenient attitude to left-wing protesters than their right-wing counterparts.

She also said the pro-Palestine demonstrations were “disturbingly reminiscent of Ulster”, claiming that they are “an assertion of primacy by certain groups — particularly Islamists — of the kind we are more used to seeing in Northern Ireland”.

She did not make it clear what Northern Ireland marches she was referring to.

While it read as though she was attempting to make a connection between Irish republicanism and Hamas, marching in the North is more usually associated with the Orange Order,

After the head of the order expressed concern with her comments, she insisted she was referring to dissident republicanism.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has been under pressure to act in the days since, with Ms Braverman accused of undermining the operational independence of - and public confidence in - the police.

The former UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly will now move into the Home Secretary position as Mr Sunak reshuffles his Cabinet.
