A Brazilian student has died after drinking 25 shots of vodka in one minute.

Humnerto Moura Fonseca, 23, was out with friends at university of Julio de Mesquita in the city of Bauru, in southwest Brazil, on Feb 28, when the group decided to play an extreme drinking contest, reports the New York Daily News.

Fonseca drank the shots and collapsed shortly after. He was rushed to hospital but died on the way.

A friend of Fonseca’s, Rodrigo Pancetti, 23, told the Daily Mail:

"We were all having a great time and someone came up with the idea of the drinking competition.

"I knew I'd already had too much and there was no way I was going to be able to drink five, let alone 25. But Humberto and the others were really up for it."

Pancetii says Fonseca had a motto on his Facebook page from Russian poet Vladimir Mayakovsky, which said:“

It is better to die from vodka than from boredom. I never thought that would become reality.”

"But once he had finished he said he felt ill and suddenly collapsed,” Pancetti said.

"We assumed it was because he was drunk but then six others also collapsed, including the winner, so we called an ambulance.'

The six other students were suspected of suffering from alcohol poisoning.

Local police have launched an investigation into the event. A spokesman said the organisers of the event will potentially be charged with homicide.

"Two fourth-year students at the university have been arrested for organizing the event without a license and for potentially causing the death of the student," he added.
